Transcend Travel CPAP Meets FAA Compliance; Sleep Apnea Patients Can Now Use Transcend On Board an Aircraft

Transcend is the ultimate travel CPAP and now sleep apnea patients can use it on board an aircraft.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) May 10, 2011

Somnetics, International Inc., the maker of the Transcend travel CPAP, has successfully completed testing for the device, which meets electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for use onboard an aircraft. That’s good news for sleep apnea patients wanting to travel by air with Transcend.

Transcend is a new wearable sleep apnea therapy device designed to be the ultimate travel CPAP. In addition to being FAA compliant, Transcend fits the travel needs of sleep apnea patients and overcomes hurdles associated with using a bulky, hassle-ridden traditional sleep machine including:

it is the smallest, most portable CPAP available
it weighs less than 1 lb, making it the lightest CPAP on the market
    it uses low power consumption
battery pack and mobile power options allow for use in remote locations
a small, hygienic heat moisture exchanger for humidification replaces the humidification
        chamber

it’s universal AC power supply automatically converts power current outside the
        United States

it automatically compensates therapy pressure to altitudes of up to 8,000 feet

While Transcend is FAA compliant, sleep apnea patients traveling by air will need to have a copy of the letter of FAA compliance from Somnetics, which is available as a printable PDF on the Transcend website. Travelers will also want to carry a letter from their doctor certifying the need for positive air pressure treatment. And, it is advisable for patients to check with the airline’s medical services in advance to clarify procedures and in-flight policies.

A CPAP is a medical device and, under the Americans With Disabilities Act, is allowable as a carry-on in addition to the standard two carry-on-limit. In general, TSA officers are familiar with CPAP devices, but it is wise to place a CPAP in a bin prior to being sent through the X-ray and to identify it as a CPAP to the officers.

About Sleep Apnea

According to the American Sleep Apnea Association, nearly 20 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea and those with obstructive sleep apnea—a condition that causes a person to stop breathing during sleep when the soft tissue in the throat collapses—tend to have high blood pressure, heart problems, headaches, and memory problems. OSA can also be linked to job impairment and motor vehicle crashes. Both men and women can develop sleep apnea, but it is more common in men, particularly middle-age men who are also overweight. Approximately half of those suffering from sleep apnea also have a snoring problem.

Transcend is a Somnetics, International Inc. Product
