The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called the nation’s problem of lack of sleep a public health epidemic. In January, the CDC published an article on the problem which states that “sleep is increasingly recognized as important to public health, with sleep insufficiency linked to motor vehicle crashes, industrial disasters, and medical and other occupational errors.” It noted that an estimated 50-70 million US adults have sleep or wakefulness disorders including obstructive sleep apnea or OSA. OSA is a condition which occurs during sleep when an individual stops breathing for many short periods of time during the night. This happens because the tongue falls back in the mouth and closes off the throat airway until the body reacts and gasps for air. These periods of oxygen starvation can occur many hundreds of times a night with each one lasting anywhere from 10 seconds to over a minute. It is this cumulative oxygen starvation that causes the associated health problems.
