Delavan, WI Dentist Spreads Sleep Apnea Awareness in Upcoming Event
Delavan, WI (PRWEB) July 08, 2012
For the last 14 years, local dentist Dr. Tom Schuetz, DDS, has volunteered his medical services and supplies in Haiti, twice a year, educating and treating the Haitian community. In his home country, he is working to help bring relief to millions of Americans suffering from sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy treatment. His inspiration came from personal experiences with sleep apnea and watching the sleep disorder grow into a national epidemic estimated to affect over 22 million people.
Oral appliance therapy (OAT) is an alternative to the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask and is offered by select dentists such as Dr. Schuetz, in efforts to bring relief to sleep apnea sufferers. “Patients with OSA no longer have to ‘learn’ to tolerate a CPAP machine, nor do they have to suffer the guilt of non-compliance of CPAP wear and usage,” Schuetz said.
In light of this growing problem, Dr. Schuetz will hold a discussion at the Aram library located at 404 E. Walworth Avenue, Delavan, WI. The event on July 11 and will begin at 7 p.m. and is free to the public. Medical studies are released daily with new findings tying sleep apnea with fatality and other health problems. Recent medical reports now show the link to cancer and sleep apnea.
The Mayo Clinic defines sleep apnea as “a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts.” Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is considered to be the most common form and occurs when breathing repeatedly stops and starts during a sleep cycle. The amount of time can range from seconds to minutes.
“OSA can be a life threatening disease at worst and a constant drain of one’s energy, activity level and overall health at best. People need to realize how frequent and common OSA presents itself,” Shuetz said. “As a dentist it is exciting and rewarding to enhance a person’s life by enabling them with the ability to get a great, sound and refreshing night sleep.”
Dr. Schuetz graduated from University of Wisconsin Eau Claire with a degree in biology and chemistry. He entered Marquette Dental School in 1972 with a full scholarship from the U.S. Navy. Shuetz graduated in 1976 with a DDS degree and entered the Navy. He Spent 10 years in the U.S. Navy. Shuetz began private practice in 1986.
Dr. Schuetz and his wife Cyndy founded The Friends of The Children, a 501 (c)3 not-for- profit organization, in efforts to help the less fortunate in Haiti. Dr. Schuetz travels to Haiti with a team of 10-12 people twice times a year. The volunteers are comprised of doctors, nurses paramedics, Hygienists, dentists, dental assistants and maintenance personnel. As part of his mission, Shuetz treats children and adults. His treatments include: extractions, preventive sealants and restorative dentistry. In addition, Shuetz uses his dental office as a drop off point for donated items.
