Doctors Health Press Reports on Study: Sleep Apnea as Detrimental to Heart Health as Diabetes
Boston, MA (PRWEB) December 23, 2012
Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation, and publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a new study from Romania that indicates obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is as detrimental to heart health as diabetes.
As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/heart-health-articles/snoring-may-be-a-sign-of-something-more-serious) notes, OSA is a common sleep disorder that has long been linked to heart disease. It is known to raise the risk of hypertension, arrhythmia (irregular heart rhythm), heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and even sudden cardiac death. But, this new study indicates that OSA may be more dangerous than previously thought.
As the article “Snoring May Be a Sign of Something More Serious” reports, the research team found that people with moderate to severe OSA had endothelial dysfunction (problems in the lining of blood vessels) and stiffer arteries than those without OSA. And, the results for people with OSA were similar to those of patients with diabetes.
The Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin article also reports that the researchers found that snoring could be a warning sign for OSA or even a sign that serious heart problems could be developing.
The article notes that the most effective immediate treatment for apnea is the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. But, while it works, the CPAP is inconvenient, because it requires the user to wear a mask while sleeping. However, Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin identifies healthy weight loss as an alternative, stating that combining regular exercise with a healthy diet could reduce or even eliminate OSA.
