Dr. David Rosen recently launched a new website to educate patients about sleep apnea dentistry in Lexington, MA. Sleep Medicine of New England (http://www.sleepapneadentistma.com) features a wealth of information about sleep apnea and the treatment options sleep apnea dentist Dr. Rosen provides.

Sleep apnea characterized by the disruption of breathing that occurs while a person sleeps. Undiagnosed or untreated sleep apnea can potentially be quite dangerous due to its ability to deprive the body and brain of oxygen. Sleep apnea develops in one of two forms: obstructive or central. The more common type, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), occurs when the airway is blocked. This blockage sometimes happens when soft tissues in the back of a person’s throat collapse during sleep. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) is the result of instability in the respiratory control center, which causes the brain to stop sending signals to the muscles to breathe. Symptoms of sleep apnea may include extreme drowsiness, difficulty sleeping, and headaches upon waking as well as snorting or choking sounds that interrupt sleep.

Sleep apnea most often affects males over 40 who are overweight and have a large neck size. Other risk factors include family history, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and nasal obstruction resulting from sinus problems, allergies, or a deviated septum. Sleep apnea is also more common in individuals with a small jawbone, large tonsils, or large tongue.

In cases where the person cannot tolerate continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), a common remedy that uses mild air pressure to keep the airways open, sleep apnea dentistry may be employed. As a sleep apnea dentist, Dr. Rosen offers seven different appliances in his Lexington office. Dr. Rosen uses several factors to determine which appliance will be most comfortable and effective for a patient, such as apnea severity, size of the patient’s tongue and soft palate, bite and jaw structure, health of gums and teeth, the presence of grinding or clenching, and range of motion in the jaw.
