Government Steps Up Awareness for Obstructive Sleep Apnea in America’s Workforce

(PRWEB) September 26, 2013

On Monday of this week, the American College of Physicians (ACP) released their official recommendations for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition that affects millions of Americans. Sleep Apnea Treatment Centers of America’s research estimates 22 million American currently suffer from OSA, of those 80% are undiagnosed. People with OSA are 2-3 times more likely to suffer from hypertension, stroke, and heart attack. As evidence points to a direct correlation between obesity and the presence of OSA, the first recommendation made by the ACP is that sufferers make a conscious effort to lose weight. Following that, the ACP recommends the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device as an initial treatment, and a mandibular advancement device as an alternative.

For people suffering from any degree of OSA, the necessity of seeking treatment is no secret. Weight loss and dietary modification can be effective in reducing sleep apnea, but often, additional treatment is necessary. As additional treatment options, CPAP or mandibular devices are often effective in reducing the symptoms in mild forms of sleep apnea as stated by the ACP. If you’re suffering from moderate or severe sleep apnea however, or are simply seeking a permanent solution to your condition rather than relying on an oxygen mask, there are lesser-known, but extremely effective options available. While the prospect of surgery is daunting to many people, all forms of OSA can be effectively reduced or eliminated with a much less invasive procedure. Called radiofrequency ablation (RFA), it works by sending targeted energy to the base of the tongue, thereby tightening and reducing its tissue, preventing it from obstructing the airway as a person sleeps. RFA is typically performed over the course of six treatments, none of which are invasive or require general anesthesia, and has produced tremendously successful results.

As one of the few providers of this procedure, Sleep Apnea Treatment Centers of America is helping OSA sufferers breathe easier every day.
