Las Vegas Dentist Hosts an Awareness Event at the YMCA to Spread Sleep Apnea Awareness to Community

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) October 10, 2012

Dr. Afshin Azimi, D.D.S., has dedicated his time to helping those in his community, including his own home team, the Las Vegas Wranglers. Dr. Azimi has also recently been part of a community health and resource fair and has held his own sleep apnea awareness events. Currently, Dr. Azimi has taken the next step and teamed up with the YMCA in efforts to spread awareness on the symptoms, health dangers and possible treatment options of sleep apnea. “This condition can be potentially deadly and I am doing what I can, to get the word out to my community,” Azimi said.

The upcoming awareness event will be open and free to the public. It will take place at the YMCA Durango Hills, located at 3521 N. Durango Dr. The event will begin at 11 a.m. on Oct. 18. As part of the event, Dr. Azimi will touch on how dentists are now part of the treatment process for sleep apnea. “Many people are not aware that dentists can be part of the treatment plan for sleep apnea,” Azimi said. “It is important to me to be able to get the word out that there are alternative treatment options, for those who suffer from sleep apnea.”

Dr. Azimi is one of a select few dentists who are now part of the treatment plan, through oral appliance therapy (OAT). Dr. Azimi is able to offer OAT, through creating a custom fabricated mouth piece that is similar to a retainer. The mouth piece works by repositioning the jaw and pushing the tongue forward or by restraining the tongue to keep airways open.

The continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask is considered to be the ‘gold standard’ for sleep apnea patients that can tolerate it. Unfortunately, CPAP treatment can be challenging and is not for everyone. CPAP intolerance is far more common than people realize.

“OAT can be an easier treatment option for patients suffering from sleep apnea. The oral appliance provides flexibility in comparison to CPAP. Hence, better compliance,” Azimi said.
