New Port Richey FL Dentist Helps Spread Sleep Apnea Awareness
New Port Richey, FL (PRWEB) May 31, 2012
On June 6, 2012 at 6 p.m., The New Port Richey Public Library (5939 Main Street, New Port Richey, FL) will host a discussion led by Dentist Donald I. Cadle Jr., DMD on the dangers of snoring and untreated sleep apnea. With the growing epidemic of sleep apnea estimated to affect over 22 million people, Dr. Cadle is reaching out to spread the awareness of the potentially life-threatening disorder. Dentists like Dr. Cadle are working to bring relief to millions of Americans through the use of oral appliance therapy (OAT) treatment.
OAT is an alternative to the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask, which is considered to be the gold standard for sleep apnea patients, for those that can tolerate it. Unfortunately, CPAP treatment can be challenging and is not for everyone and CPAP intolerance is far more common than people realize. OAT can be an effective alternative and is now offered as a first line of treatment for mild-moderate sleep apnea patients. Dentists offer OAT through creating a custom fabricated oral device that is similar to a retainer. “The mouthpiece is more comfortable and easier to use than the CPAP mask,” Cadle said.
As part of the discussion, Dr. Cadle will offer preliminary screenings and a free at-home sleep test to those attendees who exhibit potential signs and symptoms of sleep apnea. “Anything I can do to spread awareness is a real service to the community. The consequences of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) going undiagnosed, or untreated when diagnosed, can be deadly. There are numerous diseases associated with non-treatment of OSA and as a health care provider, I feel it is my responsibility to promote awareness,” Cadle said.
What is sleep apnea? According to the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA), “sleep apnea is an involuntary cessation of breathing that occurs while somebody is asleep.” Sleep experts say that most adults need between seven to nine hours of sleep each night for optimum performance, health and wellness. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “When we don’t get adequate sleep, we accumulate a sleep debt which results in sleep deprivation and has been linked to health problems such as obesity and high blood pressure.”
Dr. Cadle has partnered with SLEEPTEST.COM, an organization that was founded on the premise of a national awareness campaign for sleep apnea and CPAP alternatives. The brand was created as an empowering agent to help increase exposure of the horrific realities of the untreated sleep disorder. SLEEPTEST provides free initial sleep evaluations online that can help identify people who may be at risk of having sleep apnea. The preliminary online Sleep Test screening is a quick and easy questionnaire that can be completed in about 5 minutes.
