Paul Coleman, DMD, now provides solutions to patients suffering from sleep apnea. While men over the age of 40 make up the largest category of patients who have been diagnosed with this problem, sleep apnea is not a selective disorder and can affect people of various ages and genders, including children. When it is not treated, it can be connected to increased risk for stroke and heart failure as well as high blood pressure. In addition, it causes constant fatigue that can lead to additional problems.
Sleep apnea is often not diagnosed right away, but those who have these symptoms would be wise to be tested for the problem. The first and most recognizable symptom is excessively loud snoring. Another recognizable sign is when a person wakes up frequently in the night and finds they are short of breath. Insomnia, fatigue, headaches, drowsiness during the day, or even unintentionally falling asleep during the day, are all additional symptoms to watch out for.
There are two types of apnea, Obstructive (OSA) and Central (CSA). OSA is more common and occurs when there is an obstruction of the airway. This can happen when the soft tissue in the throat somewhat collapses during the sleep cycle. CSA is when there is no signal from the brain telling the muscles to breathe. Because there is insufficient air being breathed, not enough oxygen may be getting to the brain and the body, which can cause additional problems to the patient.
Treatments for apnea vary based on the individual needs of the patient and the severity of the problem. Certain lifestyle changes may also be necessary in order to combat the disease. Often, the patient will need to lose weight, sleep on their side instead of on their back, quit smoking, or any combination of these behaviors. The dentist may also be able to provide certain dental devices that are designed to hold the mouth in a position that stops a blockage from occurring. Some patients also require breathing treatments or a CPAP machine. As a last resort, surgery is considered.
