Sleep Apnea in the Military Dangerously on the Rise
Asheville, NC (PRWEB) March 05, 2013
Sleep apnea in the military is a rising issue as well as sleep disorders in general among U.S. soldiers. Studies have shown that the two most common sleep disorders with soldiers are insomnia and sleep apnea.
There have been studies completed with active duty soldiers. One study performed by Madigan Healthcare System included around 725 soldiers, mostly men, who had some sort of sleep disorder. About one-third of these soldiers had mild sleep apnea, about one-forth had insomnia, and around one-forth had severe sleep apnea.
With such high numbers of sleep disorders in the military, good sleep hygiene practice would be something people could benefit from.
Good sleep hygiene practices are:
Avoid napping during the day.
Relatively fixed bedtime and awakening time.
Avoid alcohol before bedtime.
Avoid caffeine before bedtime.
Exercise regularly.
Avoid a heavy meal before bedtime.
Associate your bed with sleep.
Make sleep environment pleasant and relaxing.
Sleep apnea is a prevalent issue within the military that can easily be treated with a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine. The majority of the VA clinics do help Veterans with CPAP treatment at little cost. The average cost for a CPAP machine and supplies can be expensive for anyone, upwards of $ 1,500.
For Veterans or active duty members of the military that would like an alternate option for receiving a machine or supplies can explore other options such as http://www.cheapcpapsupplies.com. This website offers supplies and machines at a discounted rate for anyone who may have a high deductible on insurance or may not have insurance.
