It took decades of trend research to figure this one out, but it couldn’t have been more apparent all along. A good night’s sleep is credited for maintaining a healthy weight (and not solely because you have energy to exercise), avoiding disease, looking good, and feeling happy. To borrow a figure of speech from the world of fashion: Sleep is the “new black.”
But, for folks who suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea – or share a bed with someone who does – a good night’s sleep is something they think they can only dream about. What they probably don’t know is that their dentist might be able to help them realize their dream. Specially-trained dentists can make a custom-fitted oral appliance, not unlike a sports mouth-guard, for the apneic patient to wear at night. This appliance has been effective for some patients who cannot tolerate their CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) device, or who travel frequently and need a portable device.
“American society has never been so bombarded by editorial and advertising content related to quality sleep, and the reason is that Americans are sleep-deprived and desperate for solutions,” says Laurence Barsh, DMD, founder of Snoring Isn’t Sexy and Quietsleep. “Dentistry has stepped up to help patients who snore and have sleep apnea, by expanding the dental practice to include oral appliance therapy by well-qualified dentists,” says Barsh.
