John Tucker, DMD of Erie Dental Sleep Therapy, LLC in Erie, PA was recently named one of Sleep Review Journal’s Best of 2012 sleep doctors. He was one of only two dentists in the United States who received this distinction among a number of physicians. Sleep Review Journal is a journal for sleep specialists.
Nearly half the population of the United State snore and 20 to 40 million people are affected by snoring’s more serious problem, sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can have serious medical consequences involving heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and high blood pressure and can be a contributing cause of motor vehicles accidents. Medical treatment of sleep apnea involves use of a device called CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) which supplies pressurized air through a tube applied to the nose to splint the airway and prevent collapse during sleep. For those people who cannot tolerate CPAP or who would prefer another solution, dentists like Dr. Tucker, who practice dental sleep medicine, can treat sleep apnea (OSA) with an oral appliance. The appliance used by Dr. Tucker holds the lower jaw in a forward position that also supports the airway during sleep.
