Norman Blumenstock DDS, MAGD, Diplomate, American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, whose general dental practice is located in Monroe Township, New Jersey, has just returned from Dallas, Texas where he completed a three day training program in the fabrication and use of the two Tap-PAP sleep apnea treatment devices. These devices provide a potential solution for the treatment of complex and severe sleep apnea patients by the use of delivering CPAP combined or attached to a custom made oral appliance.

“TAP®-PAP Custom … offers a custom mask that is fitted exactly to the patient’s face covering only the mouth and nose. This lightweight, perfectly fitted mask is made by the use of a facial moulage or impression. This process results in a nearly invisible lightweight mask for those patients who require a mechanically splinted airway (TAP®) plus additional air pressure not accommodated by nasal pillows alone. The small, customized mask creates a seal that allows for higher airflow that is still considerably below that of a conventional CPAP mask.”
By virtue of this training, Dr. Blumenstock is one of the few dental sleep medicine practitioners in the Northeast to be able to treat more complex cases of sleep apnea.
“We now have the option of using a TAP oral appliance that is connected to the Opus nasal pillow CPAP device, or use a customized oral appliance attached to a mask fabricated specifically to the patient’s facial contours, which is also connected to a CPAP,” said Dr. Blumenstock. “Since the mandible is stabilized forward by the oral appliance the CPAP pressures can be lowered, and with the custom fit, leakage can be eliminated. This will make a tremendous difference to my patients that are using CPAP.”
