Study Finds the NuMask® IntraOral Mask More Effective at Mask Ventilation than Traditional Facemask

New study reveals the NuMask IOM® to provide more effective ventilation in patients most at risk for dangerous mask ventilation complications and failure while undergoing anesthesia. The study, “Comparison of Ventilation with the NuMask vs. Traditional Mask, a Prospective, Randomized, Crossover Study” was conducted at the University of Utah Department of Anesthesiology and presented by Brad Nance, MD at the International Anesthesia Research Symposium (IARS) in San Diego, California on May 6. It was a 28-patient crossover study that involved experienced anesthesia providers ventilating anesthetized and paralyzed patients with difficult mask ventilation characteristics. “The NuMask® appears to be an effective tool for mask ventilating patients who have traditional predictors of difficult mask ventilation. On average, the NuMask® was associated with greater measured exhaled tidal volumes and smaller air leaks. In our study this indicated more effective ventilation,” concluded the study’s authors.
